Frequently Asked Questions about Rules & Regulations

How do I get a copy of the Rule Book?
You may view and print any or all of the new rule book on the GOHJA web site HERE.
You may also request a hard copy by contacting Rules & Regulations Chairperson Debbie Bjerkestrand at any horse show or via e-mail at rulesandregs@gohja.org.  You will be required to provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope in order to have a rule book mailed to you.
Please remember that updates to the rule book are not mailed out to individuals with hard copy rule books.  Rather, they are posted on the web site and the web site version of the rule book is updated as rule changes are approved.

What is acceptable show clothing under the new "Proper Attire" rule?
Hunters & Equitation - Riders should wear coats of any tweed or Melton for hunting (conservative wash jackets in season), breeches or jodhpurs, and boots.  Conservative colored protective headgear in accordance with USEF Article 318.3 is mandatory.  Spurs, crops or bats are optional.  Judges may penalize contestants who do not conform.  When management permits Hunter or Hunt Seat Equitation riders to ride without jackets, riders must wear traditional short- or long-sleeved riding shirts with chokers or ties.  Polo shirts and chaps are not permitted except in unjudged warm-up classes.  Management or Judge may eliminate an exhibitor who is inappropriately attired.

Jumpers - Management, at its discretion, may allow competitiors to compete without riding coats.  If a riding coat is not worn, riders must wear a shirt with a collar or a choker neatly tucked into riding breeches.  A windbreaker jacket or raincoat may be worn if conditions require.  In all cases, riders must appear neatly attired to appear before the public or be subject to penalty of elimination by the judges.

In summary, jackets are required at all GOHJA shows unless specified otherwise by Show Management.  When jackets are not required, hunter and equitation riders must wear show shirts and jumper riders must wear show shirts or collared shirts.  Polo shirts are no longer acceptable for hunter or equitation riders, but are still acceptable for jumper riders.  T-shirts, sleeveless shirts and tank tops are not acceptable in any class.

If I have a question about a rule while I'm at a GOHJA horse show, who do I ask?
The Show Steward is responsible for interpreting the rules at any given show.
