How and Why Points are Posted
It is the policy of GOHJA that final division results are not revealed until the Year End Awards Banquet.  The topic of changing our traditional philosophy on points posting has frequently been discussed at GOHJA Board Meetings, but it remains the opinion of the Board that we should continue to keep final points totals, and thus final division results, secret until the Year End Awards Banquet.

Traditionally, GOHJA posts or publishes points two times a year; usually once just before mid year and once just before year end.  This gives competitors a chance to check for any errors in their points.  Before the introduction of the web site, we published these postings in our newsletter "The Dotted Line".

The reason we only post point totals thru April for the first posting is because we have several divisions that only run for half the year...in other words their "season" is December thru May and another "season" starts in June and runs thru November.  So in effect, May is "Year End" for these divisions.  If we posted points thru May, everyone would know the placings in these divisions before our Year End Awards Banquet in November.  For this reason, we will also not post "year end" points all the way thru November...we'll post thru Sept or Oct instead.  Rest assured that all of your points are counted, including the May show, even if the point totals that are posted on the web site do not include the May numbers.

Anyone that would like to discuss this policy with the Board is more than welcome to attend the Board meetings.  They are typically held the second Monday of each month at Gleason's Grille restaurant in Goldenrod.

If you feel there is a error in your points, please send the specific discrepancy to rsecretary@gohja.org.  Blanket requests for all points for all shows will NOT be honored.  Please be respectful of Heather and her time.  She, as well as all of our volunteers, put in a tremendous amount of work to make sure that GOHJA is the best that it can be.

Frequently Asked Questions about Points

How are points calculated?
At each GOHJA sanctioned horse show, points are awarded for the top six places in each class.
   First place gets 7 points.
   Second place gets 5 points.
   Third place gets 4 points.
   Fourth place gets 3 points.
   Fifth place gets 2 points.
   Sixth place gets 1 point.
These points are accumulated throughout the year for Year-End Awards.  Not all divisions count toward year-end awards.  For example, Baby Green is not a GOHJA sanctioned division and therefore does not accumulate points toward any Year-End awards.  Also, the Modified divisions and the Children's Pony divisions do not count toward any high-point awards.

Does everyone that places at a show get points?
No, only GOHJA members who have paid their dues prior to the start of the horse show in which they wish to receive points are eligible to accumulate points toward Year-End Awards.  Also, horses and ponies must be registered and their owner/lessee must be a current GOHJA member in order for points to be awarded in the name of the horse/pony.  In equitation classes, the points are awarded in the name of the rider only.  In hunter classes, the points are awarded in the name of the horse/pony and also in the name of the rider (for high-point rider awards).  Professionals do not accumulate points under their own name, although they may accumulate points under a horse's/pony's name for classes in which a Professional is eligible to ride.

My friend rode my horse in the hunter over fences classes and I rode him in the hunter under saddle class.  Who gets the points?
The horse would get points for all three classes (assuming he placed in the top six).  Your friend would get the rider points for the over fences classes, and you would get the points for the under saddle class, assuming you were both Junior or Amateur GOHJA members.

I was Champion in my division.  Do I get extra points?
No, points for Year-End Awards are only awarded for first through sixth place.  Additional points are not awarded for Champion or Reserve Champion in a division.
